The Effect of Machining Parameters in ECDM on Hybrid Composite Materials

November 24 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

Sweden Time – Central European Time (CET) – UTC+1

Dr. Safa Mohammed Lafta, PhD, Speaker on ECDM Machining for Hybrid Composites.

The demand for high-performance components—critical in aerospace, automotive, and advanced energy sectors—requires manufacturing solutions that offer precision, speed, and durability. Conventional methods often fail to efficiently machine the next generation of materials.

Join Dr. Safa Mohammed Lafta, PhD, a Technical Training & Energy Research Specialist at the Ministry of Electricity (Iraq), as she presents her cutting-edge PhD findings. Dr. Lafta will detail her rigorous research into Electrochemical Discharge Machining (ECDM) as a non-traditional, highly effective method for processing complex Aluminium-based Hybrid Composites (Al6061 + SiC/B4C).

This session will move beyond theoretical concepts, providing practical, research-backed insights into how strategic process optimization—such as the incorporation of Al2O3 abrasive particles into the electrolyte—can unlock superior results, achieving a significant boost in hardness (138 HV) and massive improvements in Material Removal Rate (MRR) and surface quality (Ra).

Attendees will leave the session with actionable insights into:

  1. Process Optimization: How to control and optimize ECDM parameters (voltage, pulse time, concentration) to achieve predictable, high-quality manufacturing outcomes.
  2. Material Performance: Understanding the synergistic effects of reinforcement particles (SiC, B4C) on the mechanical properties of composites and their resistance to high-energy machining.
  3. Cost Reduction & Efficiency: Strategies to maximize MRR while minimizing Tool Wear Rate (TWR) and the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), leading to reduced production costs and extended component life.
  4. Applied Innovation: Translating rigorous academic research into commercial value propositions relevant to industrial R&D projects.

This event is specifically designed for professionals and academics involved in innovation and manufacturing R&D across the Nordic and MENA regions:

  • R&D Managers and Directors: Seeking cutting-edge methods to improve material processing and industrial efficiency.
  • Production and Manufacturing Engineers: Interested in applying non-traditional machining techniques (ECDM, EDM, ECM) to complex materials.
  • Materials Scientists and Composites Specialists: Looking to understand the relationship between material structure and machining performance.
  • Youth and Emerging Researchers: Seeking exposure to high-impact PhD research and career pathways that bridge academia and the energy/industrial sector.

(A Certificate of Attendance will be issued to all confirmed participants, verifying professional development.)
